USA and Canada permits only Channels 1 to 11. Channel 13 which
corresponds to 2472MHz is not allowed in North America, both in the
United States as well as in Canada. Channel 12(2467MHz) and
14(2484MHz) are not permitted as well. In most parts of the world
however other than USA and Canada it is permitted to use all the 13
channels, Channel 14 is allowed only in India,Japan and may be a few
other Asian countries.
So if you are in North America, your landlady is perhaps violating FCC
regulations by broadcasting on channel 13. If you are from some other
country,then unfortunately Microsoft is unnecessarily imposing North
American regulations on you.
Regarding the issue of not being able to connect in Ubuntu, there are
a few known issues with channel 12,13,14 even here in India, where
these are legal. Might be again because the hardware
