Hello Larry,
As others have said, you are not giving enough info
for us to understand what and how you are trying to
install/update/upgrade ubuntu. I'll try to help you
understand what we need to know:
You said you downloaded all kinds of stuff but getting
it to install is driving you insane(not quoting). Are
you doing "sudo aptitude update, followed by sudo
aptitude upgrade" to download and install packages.
Or. are you using synaptic package manager to install
packages or some other package manager to install
with.
Either method should work fine if you are doing it
right. We need to know just how you are attempting to
install the packages and what output error messages
are shown. Hope this helps you to provide the needed
info to help you resolve your issue.
Re: Windows, if you installed Ubuntu, if it is in fact
installed, as dual boot with windows, it should be
there and you can select to boot into it, when the
grub boot loader screen shows up early in the boot
process assuming you're using the default boot loader
and not lilo or something else. If you installed ub
untu using the live or alternate CD and selected to
use the entire disk, then you over wrote Windows and
have to reinstall it with your install/recovery CD in
order to get it back.
We don't know the expertize you have in windows or
ubuntu but suspect you are a complete novice. Tell us
if you have some expertise in ubuntu especially or are
a complete nooby type. You must give more detailed
info or exactly what you did and any error messages in
order for anyone to help you. We are willing, so help
us to help you...
