I am revisiting this to try and get it working again...
I have a SATA card (new) that I want to add to my Ubuntu box (Dell
4300 Dimension currently with 2 IDE drives)
I currently have one 500GB drive (new, formatted in ext3, tested)
attached to the card (it has two available SATA ports)
dmesg | grep SATA reports this -
[149.947314] ata3: SATA max UDMA/100 cmd 0xe0848c80 ctl 0xe0848c8a
bmdma 0xe0848c00 irq 19
[149.947406] ata4: SATA max UDMA/100 cmd 0xe0848cc0 ctl 0xe0848cca
bmdma 0xe0848c08 irq 19
[150.273960] ata3: SATA link down (SStatus 0 SControl 310)
[180.726755] ata4: SATA link up 1.5Gbps (SStatus 113 SControl 310)
lshw reports this -
description: RAID bus controller

bus info: pci at 02:09.0

logical name: scsi3

configuration: driver = sata_sil latency 64

ec98-ec9b ioport ec80-ec8f iomemory: fe1bfc00-fe1bfdff irq19
hwinfo reports the driver as active
The problem is that there isn't a device in /dev for it. The disk was
formatted to ext3 prior to installing it in the card. Should the drive
be low-level formatted with the SCSI utility which appears at boot
prior to its being used?
Thanks for any help. I'd really like to have the storage on the system.
Jack
