Removing gnome-volume-manager

G'day there One & All,

Following from my earlier question/thread "Can't pin down DVD no
mount problem" I've found an instance where a similar problem to mine
was solved by a removal and re installation of the gnome-volume-manager.
I tried to uninstall the package, but Synaptic told me that I'd be also
uninstalling gnome; gnome-desktop-environment; & ubuntu-desktop.

Is it possible to uninstall this package (so as to remove and then
rebuild config files) without killing off my desktop?

See ya
