GRUB ?

Actually, I need to know what happens in the order once grub is called.  It 
seems it can't find whatever the first file it uses is.  There has to be a 
sequence of things happening but in his case they are not working.  Is there 
a way to get to a shell once you have the plain black screen with the 
word "GRUB _" with that  " _" just sitting there blinking?  There seems no 
way I have found so far to get it to do anything at all once it is there and 
it is about the first thing that happens.
