It's Apache - you either want to run an externally accessible web site, or
not.  It's up to you.

As for ping, every once in a very long while, I try to ping my system, only
to remember my firewall drops ICMP packets and doesn't respond to pings. 
There's not a lot of need for it.  I certainly don't care if anybody _else_
can ping me.
