I've never had to do this for VirtualBox. And documentation [1] says
nothing about "making the dev folder readable", either.

The only references to /dev permissions I can find are in the
instructions for setting up bridge networking [2].

They mention "sudo chown root.vboxusers /dev/net/tun; sudo chmod g \
+rw /dev/net/tun"
