Building kernel with RAID

Using the doc below, I use xconfig to select RAID options for my kernel
and all builds without error, but I get a kernel panic when trying to
boot from the kernel...

The panic messages says 'not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on
uknown-block(0,0)'. I also notice this procedure does not produce any
initrd image. What am I doing wrong?
