Help me. How to restore my ubuntu 6.06 because of faling to upgrade to 8.04

I have tried these comands. But it still doesn't work.
I try to intall another xserver, such as kubuntu, But it also failed.
Now I can enter into the gnome, but the font is error and only many
square-box , not the correct fonts, display.
when I close the xserver by Ctrl-Alt+F4, some solid squre-box also occure in
the command line model.
I guess the font is error. But I don't know how to correct them.
