No sure what the Hook-off field is, as I don't have one of those on my
alsamixer for the hda-intel card, but I have a different codec (ALC662)

OK. For the AD1986A, there are a few model options you could try, as below.
AD1986A
6stack 6-jack, separate surrounds (default)
3stack 3-stack, shared surrounds
laptop 2-channel only (FSC V2060, Samsung M50)
laptop-eapd 2-channel with EAPD (Samsung R65, ASUS A6J)
laptop-automute 2-channel with EAPD and HP-automute (Lenovo N100)
ultra 2-channel with EAPD (Samsung Ultra tablet PC)
As you can see, the first one is the default, which will be the one that's
being used at the moment. Your notebook isn't mentioned here, but it's worth
trying the other options. So sudo gedit, and navigate
to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base, and at the bottom of the alsa-base file add one
which you want to try. For example.
options snd-hda-intel model=laptop
Save the changes to the file, reboot, open alsamixer, and unmute anything
muted, and push sliders up. You will probably see different controls for each
of the model options you try. Left, and right arrow keysallow you to select a
control. Up, and down to move the slider, and M key to toggle mute/unmute.
See man page for alsamixer.
My alsamixer for the hda-intel card has the following controls, so you may see
something similar on yours, see below.
Master: slider, and mute/unmute switch
Headphone: mute/unmute switch
PCM: slider
Front: slider and mute/unmute switch
Front Mic: slider and mute/unmute switch
Line: slider and mute/unmute switch
Mic: slider and mute/unmute switch
IEC958: switch (this is for digital out using SPDIF)
Master, PCM, and Front, are normally the important ones.
If you're using Gnome, also check the Gnome volume control. I use KDE, so am a
bit unfamiliar with Gnome.

I did a quick Google for it, and saw the specs, etc. Is it a very new model?

All the best.
