Depending on how you do it, most backups aren't bootable. In most cases 
they're compressed or some backup methods won't transfer from internal 
configurations to an external, storable media and boot with that 
configuration since the drive parameters are different. But I could be 
wrong, and I don't know how you're doing the backups.

You could, of course, try cloning your drive to an identical drive in a 
USB enclosure and then swap the drive around if it won't boot from the USB.

Or use Partimage to clone your partition over and then format and 
"restore" the partition, if you're feeling brave. Or restore to another 
drive and see if it still works.
