The BIOS with the ability to boot from USB should be all that's needed
to use the boot sector of a USB drive. There are a number of
mini-distros that boot from thumbdrives this way, and newer dells will
see a plugged in USB drive and offer to boot from it at boot time from
the boot menu if you hit the proper key at startup time (but won't show
it if you don't have it plugged in and powered up at startup).
