Me too, now. Started when I first ran the Hardware
Driver Manager from K menu which now says that the
NVIDIA accelerated driver(latest cards) is active and
in use. It broke my X window. I couldn't setup my
monitor and video card even though the
settings/configuration that popped up on reboot had my
monitor manufacturer listed, but not my exact model
no.
LG L226WTQS. Same with my video card, BFG G71[GeForce
7300GS], not listed under NVIDIA. I tried the G7
series, the generic lcd-1680X1050(my native
resolution) and some others but could never boot into
x even after doing "nvidia-xconfig" as root from a tty
console. I was only able to get back to kde login by
booting in recovery mode and running "xfix" but things
are still not quite normal. Ever so often a low
resolution screen will show up on my KDE 4.1 Desktop
which usually goes away after a while. Very buggy or
I'm going something wrong.

Same here and I know that it was installed. Installed
again with synaptic but synaptic is buggy also and
wont complete the last step, ldconf I think. Had to
kill synaptic. Aptitude show said it's installed but
wonder about ldconf. Purged it from konsole and
reinstalled with aptitude to be safe.

Well, noticed that nvidia-glx-new-envy conflicts with
nvidia-xconfig when doing an aptitude show. Maybe we
should just install nvidia-glx-new-envy from konsole
or tty and not use nvidia-xconfig. That's my intent if
rebooting after installing nvidia-glx-new-envy and
everything just works again. If it does, I wont be
using nvidia-xconfig or Hardware Driver Manager again
from the K menu. You might consider it.
