By now this must be driving you nuts... Can you please try 2 more
alternates - both will require downloads: cd and dvd, and both do not
involve Ubuntu.
Go to:
http://www.knoppix.org/
download the standard knoppix CD and the DVD.
http://www.knopper.net/knoppix-mirrors/index-en.html
The CD will boot a KDE version of linux on just about any machine.
The DVD version contains ADRIANE which is specifically designed for the
blind.

Karl Knopper is (the creator of knoppix) & he created the ADRIANE
version for his wife Adriane (who is blind). Ref:

provides the documentation, forum links etc.
I'm not trying to blow you off Ubuntu and will be happy to continue
trying to help get your Ubuntu issues resolved; but Knoppix 5.3.1 (DVD
version) with ADRIANE just might be your best bet for exploring linux
from a liveCD/DVD.
