Did you run it as root, ie., from a terminal do:
sudo nvidia-xconfig
When I first did the above yesterday am, it populated
the popup with all the info in right and left panels.
But right now my X windows is broke bad after doing
something envolving Hardware from the K menuthe to
help a newby off list and I can't fix it. Maybe
someone on the list can offer some solution.

Now, am having similiar issues after doing the
Hardware Drivers thingy from K menu. I can't even get
into X windows(kde 4,1). using the live CD i found
this is my xorg.log:

(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize the NVIDIA
kernel module! Please ensure
(EE) NVIDIA(0): that there is a supported NVIDIA
GPU in this system, and
(EE) NVIDIA(0): that the NVIDIA device files have
been created properly.
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Please consult the NVIDIA README
for details.
(EE) NVIDIA(0): *** Aborting ***
(II) UnloadModule: "nvidia"
(II) UnloadModule: "wfb"
(II) UnloadModule: "fb"
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable
configuration.

Fatal server error:
no screens found

That Hardware Driver thing is a real X killer.
Looks like it's back to Vista until I can find a
solution. I hate that.

I obviously don't know but I wont use the Hardware
Driver thingy again. Not trying to highjack a thread
but to just show the Danger of using the Hardware
Driver from K menu and I expect the same results from
gnome menu.
