samba problems

Try this on the Windows box in a command prompt:

net use z: \\server\share /user:username

Later, please post the [HD3] and [general] part's of your smb.conf.

PS: I had a similar problem last week with an ubuntu server, but the 
machine was acting as a domain controller...
