Just in case it wasn't clear - the 'purge' option removes the
configuration files as well as the software proper. A regular
uninstall leaves the config files on the premise that if you do
re-install, you'll want it back the way it was, not start over from
scratch.
And I'm pretty sure Chris is right - the Synaptic complete removal
option does the same
