You could also try the noapic boot parameter....

This kernel panic thing seems to crop up with most Linux distributions
from time to time... and recently I've seen it with various Asus
motherboards (there's a bug in the shipped BIOS on a good number of
Asus boards that shows up when you boot a Linux kernel).

I believe you press F6 on the inital boot screen (not 100% sure on the
key to press and I don't have a boot CD handy to check right now), and
then you will get a line of boot options where you can add noapic.
