8.04: no modes or monitors in xorg.conf

Both the Hardy LiveCD and a Wubi install work on my IBM Thinkpad
1161-93G. This is the first time I've got any version of Ubuntu to
install on this machine since 6.06.
However, my graphics are stuck at 800x600. (Better than Xandros
managed: it was stuck at 640-x480!)
Looking in my xorg.conf, I have no modeline at all. There are no
monitor identifier sections at all. :¬(
I've not seen this before. Given that there is no line to add to, can
one write a whole monitor definition? Is there a guide anywhere on how
to do this?
