Yes,
$ DISPLAY=:0 glxinfo
worked for me too.

And so does:
sudo apt-get remove xserver-xgl

I hadn't done that (at least not intentionally!) before.

As I've put here:

Applications | Other | Screens & Graphics
still seems "unconnected", and so perhaps this is not "the" solution, but at 
least I have got a fully working machine on a normal boot.
