I hate it when I go to the trouble of creating a post hoping something
I've found will benefit the community, only to find it was a dumb
mistake I might have made.

I went digging around in gconf-editor and did a search for anything
having to do with composit*. Sure enough, metacity has a compositer
feature that can only be turned on through gconf-editor. I unchecked
this option and my system seemed to freeze but the shadowing effect
disapeared. I was happy I found the problem but aggravated as I'm in
the middle of a long synaptic download. Anyway long story short, I did
Alt-f2 and did "metacity --replace" and the system returned. Woohoo
fixed it!

Thanks for taking the time to read my request for help....

maybe after a while, I will have learned enough to be useful on the
list :-)

Patience yields far greater results than brute force or rage ever could
so relax......it's just life !!!
