It's much better to lock your doors than to install a alarm system
that detects known burglars by face recognition.

Keep your software up to date, only use software from trustworthy
sources, don't execute programs that come by mail, be careful when
installing software that can e used from remote, don't use root
privileges if it's not necessary, ... That gets you pretty good
security. If you feel you need more security have a look at the
harden-* packages. harden-doc installs the 'Securing Debian HOWTO' in
/usr/share/doc/harden-doc. As Ubuntu is a Debian derivative most of
the things in there are useful for Ubuntu, too.

There is no way to get 100% security, it's all about reducing the
likelihood.
