I'm not sure you said what you mean :-)  You "can't think of many" that
_would_ or _would not_ boot from an external drive?

I would be willing to bet that any Dell laptop new enough to get an XP logo
will boot from an external USB drive - the standard BIOS has supported it
at least since my last Dell, which is just over 4 years old now.
