alsa woes in 7.10

I have an Asus motherboard with AC97 on board audio that the BIOS claims is enabled. Using Audacity 1,3,3-beta I have a choice of six input devices in preferences. All except ALSA (default) give a "device not there" error. The default choice is accepted but does nothing even when a known good signal is supplied to the input port. This is very frustrating. Can anyone refer me to a source for a solution or workaround for this issue?

Thanks,

R
