nautilus & hidden files

Open gconf-editor (Applications->System->Configuration Editor) or type
gconf-editor at the terminal.

Open the tree on the left to:
/
-> Desktop
---> gnome
-----> file_views

and on the top right tick the box next to "show_hidden_files"

You may also want to look at the show_backup_files option.

(Tested on Ubuntu 6.06LTS, wording or commands may differ on other versions)
