I have about the same lspci[1] on my main workstation.  It's solid as a
rock; never goes down, never hiccoughs.  It even has an nvidia graphics
chipset.

I use nvidia here, but have used 'nv' in the past and it works well
(although not as fast - but it plays more nicely than nvidia with
suspension).  nv alsow works well with nvidia-fb, which is much faster
than vesafb.

I think so, about.

Yes.  Check your ram.  Lock-up problems often have to do with ram.  

Also make sure that your computer really is locked up, and it's not
just the graphics.  Try logging in across the network or something to
make sure the problem isn't the display.
