What is the contents of /etc/hosts ?

cat /etc/hosts

in a terminal to see. You might not have the loopback interface
configured, for some reason. You should have something like this:

$ cat /etc/hosts
127.0.0.1	localhost
127.0.1.1	yourhostname

### other stuff here

If your loopback ( 127.0.*.* ) is not right, the machine has an
identity crisis ;) This can slow it down...
