And I'll echo the previous response and point out that there's little
point in replying unless you give some hint as to what you are replying
to.

But if we're creating a standard based on natural conversation, how many
conversations do you know that look something like this?

Hello.

You said "Hello."
Hello. How are you?

You said I said "Hello." Then you said "Hello. How are you?
I'm fine.

Just think how fast that would become boring. And now think of it in
terms of an IRC channel. What if that went the same as the conversation
snippit above?
Natural conversation goes more like

Hello.

Hello. How are you?

I'm fine. And you?

Good as well. Nice weather we're having isn't it?

Yup. It rained a little this morning though.

This is very easy to follow, and there are no snippits of previous
points of the conversation.
