How does one clean a messy fstab ?

just a side not upon "blkid" there is a really neat program for that:

$ sudo vol_id /dev/sda1
[sudo] password for USER:
ID_FS_USAGE=filesystem
ID_FS_TYPE=ext3
ID_FS_VERSION=1.0
ID_FS_UUID=XXXXX
ID_FS_UUID_ENC=XXXXX

with that information update your fstab and your done.
