Sorry for the slow reply.

The ipw3945 you described is "normal". It was one of the reasons I
migrated sooner to Hardy (didn't know, though, that iwl3945 was already
in Gutsy).

Basically sometimes I couldn't kill any more processes and wireless
connection was a no no.

But anyway, you're now using iwl3945 so you should be fine now...
