How to upgrade Ubuntu

Please tell me how can I install a newer version of Ubuntu without
re-formatting my hard disks.

For example, I need to install the new version (8.xx) of Ubuntu replacing
the existing version (7.10), without having to lose my files, settings and
installed packages.

Please help.
