If you can "ssh localhost" and get a prompt, yes...

Maybe you missed it in the output, hopefully maybe?  "ps ax |grep ssh" 
doesn't show anything still?

Ah...no, then, I don't think you have it install.  sudo apt-get 
opensshd-server? or opensshd?
