Has the drive been formatted yet?
To see if the drive has been detected at all, open a terminal window 
(Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal), plug in the drive, and type 
"dmesg" (without quotes) in the terminal window.  If the drive is being 
detected, you should see some lines indicating that a new USB device has 
been attached.
