Copying a Mixed Mode CD: Why did I have to use Nero Linux Trial?

I tried to backup a Mixed Mode CD (containing both CD audio and video) by
copying the cd from within both K3b and Brasero but both failed! K3b got
almost half way before it froze and I burned a few useless coasters, where
brasero just went on forever with progress bars and I exited because the
waiting period was insane. So I gave up and downloaded the Nero Linux
trial program and it worked without a problem! When I selected to copy a
mixed mode CD it did the job quickly, without any problems! I verified the
CD and it was burned correctly! Up until now everything I've done with K3b
was enough, but when it failed to copy a mixed mode CD, I searched the web
on this and sure enough, lots of other Linux and Ubuntu Linux users have
had problems with this, with no easy answer in sight to resolve this. Some
people have suggested they untick mounting options in Gnome or going about
mounting media differently before burning but this didn't work for me and
in my opinion fooling with these other options in Gnome is not something
we should have to do, especially since Nero Linux does this without the
user having to do anything else outside of Nero Linux.

So what's the problem, why don't I just use Nero Linux? One, I don't want
to rely on a proprietary application in Linux, this is part of why I
switched to Linux to get away from buying software, license keys, and
proprietary software which could do anything behind my back and I wouldn't
know of it. Two, I don't want to buy it nor do I want to rely on a trial
which expires shortly after install, I seldom burn Mixed Mode CDs and who
knows whether a new Nero Linux trial version will be available on the rare
occasion I need it for burning Mixed Mode CDs.

My question: Is there a free and open source program for Linux which
copies Mixed Mode CDs with audio and video which is simple and easy, where
I only have to press a button or two like in Nero Linux or do they all
fail as K3b and Brasero did for me? I'm using the most recent K3b/Brasero
versions for Gutsy with backports repository enabled. I have all the cd
burning extras and audio programs installed, I'm missing nothing and have
used K3b for years and never had the need to copy/burn a mixed mode CD
before so I never discovered this problem until now.

I'm not interested in excuses or work arounds, and I'm not going to boot
into Windows, I shouldn't have to and I won't, it doesn't exist on my
computer nor will I entertain a convicted monopoly with my money. I want a
simple FREE application to do the job, or I'll just bite the bullet and
pay for Nero Linux so I don't have to waste my time downloading trials
when Linux CD burning applications fail me, which is rare thing, this is
the first time I've found something I couldn't do easily.
