Updating kernel in ubuntu 7.04

Any particular reason why? If it's to get new drivers, you may just want
to upgrade to the gutsy beta now ("update-manager -d").

You might try to use the gutsy version, but my guess is it's going to be
a headache. 

If you compile from source, you'll have to manually manage security
updates, which may not be worth your time.
