Try it the other way round.
Disconnect both. Reboot.
Open the system log viewer. It's under the System | Administration menu.
Open the kernel view (kern.log). This will tell you if the system
recognises the reader.
*Now* plug the *empty* card reader.
Did the system log indicate that a new device had been detected?
If so, insert your card.
You should see more messages in the system log, and shortly
afterwards, a new icon should appear on the GNOME desktop.
