Where is temporary download files being saved?

Hi All,
I have finally finish installation ubuntu on 128MB RAM PC.
I use alternate cd to install it. And having install midnight commander 
also.
I have tried install Abiword from Repositories DVD as recommend by Mr. 
Durahman.

I have heard that when we install a software actually they create a 
temporary file
or something like that before they install on the system.
Where is the temporary files being saved?
