I have no direct experience yet, but I've been thinking how to do
almost the same thing as the OP for ages and so I am very interested
to hear what others suggest. So to keep the discussion going, I'll
list a couple arguments against sw version control for general
document management that I have read here and there:

- you can't index everything in a coherent manner, be it text or, even
worst, metadata, including for example those embedded in JPEG files

- you waste lots of space if you keep different versions of raster
images or other kind of binary files (MS Office, Opendocument..)

- more cumbersome configuration to make them truly usable for non
programmers, especially over a web interface.

What do you think? Again, I have no direct recent experience about
this, I'm just summarizing things I've heard to check whether they're
(still) true or not.
