Hmmm, I've googled for '"Olympus SP 500 UZ" ubuntu', and the first hit
indicates that it partially could work:

"Gphoto2 seems to recognize this camera as the Olympus C-370Z model and
I can download images from the camera correctly. But when I use the
-capture-image command, the camera apparently snaps the photo but the
lcd screen displays a "xD card error", beeps, and then turns off."
Anyway, if it continues to fail, the only thing I can think of is trying
to access the camera's memory card in a card reader, many laptops have
them built in, and external ones are pretty cheap. This may be a way
around buying a new camera. If it also fails, there's little more you
can do. Those cameras that just act as a USB Mass Storage Device (USB
harddisk) make the least problems.
