    So yeah, not Nagios.  Ya know you can wrap 'ping' in a bash 
script...have it delay, try three pings, and return the result. In an 
'if' statement this could send you mail, etc.  I think you've picked the 
right tool for this job.

    If you're part of a Linux support team, the kind that keeps servers 
on their toes, the Nagios plan is a good one...and customers LOVE being 
able to go to a web page and getting a summary of what's going on, and 
all that.  Customer service is how Linux is going to take, and keep 
ground in the marketplace.

    But I'm rambling; must be the painkiller I took for this spiderbite; 
I'll shut up, now...
