"watchdog" for a process?

True, the listing (even with Synaptic) will give some results.  But I've 
danced the "let's install a bunch of similar things and see which works 
best" dance quite a bit in my time, and whenever possible now I ask 
about it in hopes that someone else can say "I use XYZ and it works very 
well..."

Yes, apt-get works well, but there are plenty of instances where cruft 
gets left behind in places, or I forget to uninstall something at some 
point, etc...etc...

Thank you for the pointer.  I'll check it out.
