Atop?

Another question...they're just pouring out today.

I see a process called "atop" running on my system, and it looks like 
it's running in the background from /etc/init.d...pstree shows it is 
definitely from init.

Can someone explain if it's used for something else as a dependancy, or 
if I can somehow connect to it and get statistics from it or something? 
  I can run it as a utility at the command prompt, but I sure didn't run 
it separately before and it looks like there's a binary data log in 
/var/log from it.
