Capturing video

I'm playing around with a webcam and youtube. I was able to capture 
video with VLC and mencoder. I am unable to capture video with ffmpeg. I 
got the following command from: http://www.linuxjournal.com/article/7794

    ffmpeg -vd /dev/video -ad /dev/sound/dsp -r 10 \
    -s 352x288 video_test.avi

Here's what I get when I run the command:

    ffmpeg: unrecognized option '-vd'

What's going on?

If anyone has any video capture and or youtube suggestions let me know. 
This is new territory for me.
