Only one instance of VLC / Mplayer, please

When we open multiple files with either VLC or Mplayer (both have the
same annoying behavior) we get multiple instances of the program. How
can I configure them (or at least one of them) to play the file in the
previously open instance, replacing whatever is currently playing?
