I think the point here is that a wusb54gsc _shouldn't_ actually need you to
compile the driver, if you follow the instructions noop pointed to.  That's
often why development on these out-of-kernel drivers stops - because the
kernel has caught up to them.

fwiw, if you have to go the setup.exe route, you might try running setup.exe
under wine, then extracting the drivers from WINE's .../windows directory
(I've got no real expectation that the setup will complete under wine,
though).  Otherwise, run the setup on somebody's Windows machine, and then
copy them to a usb stick.
