Nobody that I have seen has ever asked that hardware specs be open-sourced.
As for drivers, it's not necessary that _they_ be open-sourced. If the
hardware manufacturers were to publish a full API for the hardware, OSS
developers would deal with producing the open source drivers. I firmly
believe that it isn't in any hardware company's interest to waste their
resources creating closed-source drivers when they can get unpaid help.
They don't make a profit from software.
