Keyboard problem

When I first installed Ubuntu, I discovered that I was unable to enter a "_" and a "+" sign. Switching to an older MS Internet Pro Keyboard solved the problem.

Recently I discovered now that I was unable to enter my password when installing a printer driver. The command I typed was accepted but when the password was required I was unable to type anything.

Any suggestions. Can I disable the password requirements as I am the only person using this computer? Would a re-install solve the problem.
