Unable to open tar.gz

Do this:

cd /home/orest/Desktop
tar xvzf thunderbird-2.0.0.6.tar.gz

Note that the parameter following the "f" is the file.  So "tar xvfz" will 
untar the file named "z".  Also note the leading "-" is optional.
