In reference to the link in my earlier post, I forgot to point you
explicitly to this:

"... you MUST disable the Ubuntu-provided fglrx by performing these
actions: 
      * Disable fglrx in /etc/default/linux-restricted-modules-common 
      * Run sudo /sbin/lrm-manager 
      * Run sudo depmod -a 
      * Reboot"

And you need to "sudo apt-get remove xorg-driver-fglrx". Read this forum
