Hi there,
I use Turboprint (http://www.turboprint.de/english.html).
Ok, it cost E29.95 (some R300), but it just *works* and
I felt that it was money well-spent, specially as I bought it a year
or so ago, when only a few deskjets (and very few Canons) were supported
in linux.    
A utility that ships with OpenSuSe 10.2 = gutenprint might also work for
you.   It might even be in one of the Ubuntu repos, or if you're brave, 
try alien to convert the rpm to deb ;-)
